The project, which is scheduled to conclude in September, has been a massive undertaking that began several years ago. We’ve included pictures below to show the progress, flooring requirements and how they were integrated into the overall renovation.
IMAX Workplace Phase Two will require 20,000 square feet of various flooring materials including luxury vinyl tile, marmoleum and carpet tile for the reconfiguration of the balance of the existing offices and space. This includes meeting rooms, boardrooms, additional breakout areas and washrooms.

“My favourite area would be the café and the intricate work seen there in terms of flooring,” said Lorna Howieson, Senior Director, Global Facilities and Administration, IMAX Corporation. “It looks great and is a fantastic space. Last time we focused on the reception area. This time it was the café. The result is great lighting, signage and the flooring is more intricate.”

See our earlier blog post. Here we profiled the initial phase of the IMAX Workplace development project, which started in 2015. Over 40,000 feet of various flooring materials were required. Of that total there was 3,000 yards of carpet.

This final IMAX Workplace phase will see renovations to over 80,000 square feet. Vestacon Ltd. is the general contractor and Gensler is implementing design. Phase Two flooring manufacturers include Milliken carpet, LSI Floors, Tarkett Commercial Flooring and Mosa tile.
Regarding the flooring part of the project Howieson has expressed that it’s been a “positive relationship,” with Darwin Fisher.

“We need to be ready on demand as delays can create a domino effect on other trades so having materials ready to go is a critical part of the project,” says Doug McDonald, President of Darwin Fisher. “It’s a fine balancing act coordinating with all of the differing trades and dealing with ever changing schedules, but things have been moving forward very seamlessly.”

Darwin Fisher was part of the project from the beginning. Phase One required changes to meeting rooms, boardrooms, main reception, two theatres, more than a half dozen washrooms and break out rooms. Each of these areas had different flooring needs.
For the first Phase Darwin Fisher worked with Noran Industries Ltd., a construction management and commercial contracting firm, who was the general contractor for the project.
